SAP in association with CNBCTV18 presented one of the most comprehensive virtual summits on consumer product goods (CPG). The webinar was one of the six exclusive forum series under the Industry Knowledge Exchange (IKeX) programme, powered by SAP

Decoding Digital Transformation Trends in CPG Sector

The discussion focussed on how technology and innovation are impacting the dynamics of the CPG and retail sector. It also discussed the significance of building tech-powered customer-centric business models and the role of CFOs as the catalysts for digital transformation.

The one-and-a-half-hour webinar was led by Ruchiraa Sharma, senior anchor, CNBC TV 18 with the keynote address rendered by Mr Gunjan Shah, CEO, Bata India Ltd.

In her open remarks, Ruchiraa noted that, despite the disruptions, the consumer experience landscape was evolving faster than ever before and digital transformation was pivotal in unlocking the true potential of consumer experience and moving towards a more resilient future.

In his keynote address, Mr Shah suggested that industries must come up with innovative ideas to meet the expectations and demands of the new generation of “phygital (physical and digital) customers.”

“The pandemic has accelerated the ongoing journey of digital transformation. Millions of consumers have entered this stream. The demand for connectivity has dramatically gone up and its cost has crashed. All these trends are indicating that digital is here to stay.” said Mr Shah. “As the physical world has reopened now, the phygital consumer is expecting a seamless experience. This trend is going to be very critical moving forward”, he added.

Mr Shah also emphasized that as society was gradually returning to normalcy, both physical and digital channels were evolving a way to coexist. He said that new-age technologies such as machine learning, artificial intelligence and data analytics would play a crucial role in striking a balance between the two. Terming that the age of MIS dashboards was long gone, Mr Shah said that analytics mapping and multiple databases would provide more insights, rather than just churning out data.

The webinar then discussed the role of new age CFOs as the catalysts for digital transformation. Ruchiraa asked the group of CFOs who were participating in the summit what were the major challenges that they faced in the process of digital transformation in their respective organizations and how were they leveraging advanced technology to overcome those challenges.

Ms Jayashree Satagopan, Executive VP & CFO, Coromandel International Limited, said that the process of digital transformation was also about business process transformation. “When we talk about adopting digital tools and technologies, we find that certain processes in the company also need to change and this needs to be driven right from the top,” she said. She added that a core team was formed to drive digital adoption and digital transformation across the organization and data from tools employed right from the shop floor to the marketplace could be seamlessly viewed and insights drawn for the leadership and sales teams.

Jayashree further said that automation, adopting new technologies, training and skilling the teams and helping them understand the importance of data-driven, precise decision making were some of the major challenges in her organization.

Another panellist, Mr Snehal Shah, CFO, Century Textiles and Industries Ltd. told the fellow participants that his company had a very low level of technology adoption, but in the post-pandemic era, the company was scaling up in terms of technology usage. “We have recently upgraded to the latest S/4Hana ERP system and we have lots of opportunities in the digital sphere, particularly in the real estate sector. Digitalization was always part of our strategic plan, but the pandemic accelerated it”, Mr Shah stated.

Mr Saranyan Rajagopalan, Executive VP of finance and CFO, TTK Prestige Ltd., noted that the pandemic made industries shift their focus to digitalization. “The pandemic made all of us realize the significance and benefits of managing our business remotely and focussing on digital transformation, It also made us realize that digitalization has immense benefits. Therefore, digitalization can play a key role in adopting the fastchanging environment and we are aligning ourselves to have real-time data for the right decisions at the right time”, Mr Rajagopalan said.

Mr Rohit Bhagade, CFO, India Subcontinent at SAP, shed some light on the importance of SMEs in the Indian economy. He also discussed at length, the growth and possibilities of cloud computing and the significance of sustainable business practices, thus setting the context for the Indian market.

Mr Bhagade said, “SMEs are truly the backbone of the Indian economy. Today SMEs contribute to roughly 30% of our economy and over the next five to ten years SMEs are expected to contribute 50 per cent to overall India's GDP. From an employment generation standpoint as well, SMEs today contribute by having 11 crore people employed in the 63 million MSMEs in India”, Mr Bhagade added.

The SAP CFO opined that the Indian market, including public and government sectors, is a strategically very important market for SAP, as it is fertile ground for the growth of start-ups and unicorns. Also, the government is keen to take various initiatives for digitalization.

“We are focusing on fintech, start-ups, and unicorns at present. With almost three unicorns every month, the entrepreneur engine seems to be in fast gear. We continue to focus on this particular area and accelerate”, Mr Bhagade stated.

He also added that there was continuous growth happening in the public sector towards digitalization. “SAP has been a partner to various state and central projects and initiatives. Our 500 crore investment to localize the availability of solutions in India will give us a major boost as to how we partner with the public and citizen services”, said Mr Bhagade.

Touching upon the topic of sustainability, Rohit said that the threat of climate change was very real now and as a custodian of core processes SAP had been enabling enterprises of different sizes with sustainable business practices.

Mr Manoj Ahuja, Group CFO, ABIS Exports India PVT Ltd., IB Group applauded the role of SAP solutions in digitalization that had been going on in his organization since last decade. "We have recently scaled to ERP solution and have started using S4/HANA to upgrade the overall systems in the organization.”

On the role of CFOs in the evolving business models and in the business transformation era, Ms Jayashree Satagopan termed partnering and value creation as the key aspects for any business and it involved looking into the right opportunities for profitable growth. She added that from an external perspective, value creation and working closely with the CEOs to find ways for sustainable profitability were becoming an integral part of the CFO's role. “CFOs are also expected to be an enabler of change, to be the catalyst driving the change for technology adoption within the organization,” she stated.

Adding to that, Mr Rohit said that CFOs are no more just the custodian of finance but are playing key roles in the digital transformation of the organization. “Financial transformation is at the heart of business transformation. The way we engage with our customers, suppliers and employees, touch core finance processes. Therefore, it is very important for us to ensure we digitize these three, in order to improve customer, supplier and employee experiences,” Mr Bhagade stated.

He added that after SAP migrated to S4/Hana in 2019, a four-year automation roadmap gave them access to technologies and innovation which meant that this particular technology could be leveraged in their day-to-day operations. The SAP top official, Mr Bhagade, informed the panellists that there were at least 40 innovations under active live production in his organization which will help the CFOs to optimize their productivity as value creators.

“Regular refresher training of existing technology solutions for the users is a must”, Mr Snehal suggested while speaking on the role of CFOs in digital transformation in the CPG sector. A deep dive into existing processes and technology was required to know about the need for change and how to meet new requirements and to create a good business case for transformation, he added.

Talking about cloud technology, he said that it is the biggest enabler to carry out the process of digital transformation. Speaking along the same lines, Mr Bhagade suggested that there was a need for upskilling and reskilling the workforce while embracing technology. “Digital transformation is not a constant, as it is ever-changing, and you will have to continuously perform this transformation", Rohit said.

Concurring that the traditional role of CFOs had changed, Mr Manoj said that every stakeholder should be a part of the digital transformation process. Stressing the need for real-time data, Ms Jaishree said that collaboration and information sharing across the functions within the organization was very critical in the present so that silos could be broken Answering a question from Ruchiraa about enterprise visibility, Mr Rajagopalan advised that by using all the ERP systems companies should prepare a dashboard report and share it across the functions so that everyone can work in a seamless manner as per the business requirements.

While India is in the midst of becoming an investment hub, knowledge and information sharing through conclaves like IKeX can prove to be pivotal for optimizing the potential of business leaders present in the country.
